Trade Union and its main function:
An organization whose members are usually workers or employees called the Trade Union. The main role of the Trade Union is to protect and promote the interest of their members. To protect the interests of workers against discrimination and unfair labor practices are the primary function of the Trade Union.
Here is a list of things that a trade union works after:
- Attainment of better wages.
- Attainment of better benefits.
- Improvement of their living conditions.
- Improvement of working conditions.
- Aligning complaint procedures.
- Work after getting proper holidays, healthcare, and retirement benefits.
- Protection of their integrity and rights.
- Helping employees strengthen the unity amongst them.
Main Objectives of Trade Union:
1. Wages and Salaries
The most important topic in the Trade Union is the Wages and Salaries. In an organization industry, wages and benefits are determined through processes such as collective bargaining, wage boards, conciliation, and adjudication.
2. Working Condition
To insure the safety of workers is another major objective of the Trade Union. Basic facilities like drinking water, minimum working hours, paid holidays, social security, safety equipment and others should be provided for every worker while working.
3. Employee and Employer Relations
To maintain the peace in the industry atmosphere there must be harmony between employer and employee. Sometimes conflicts arise in the industry due to the superior power of management.
Types of Unions in Trade Union
1. Industrial Union
2. Craft Union
3. General Union
1. Industrial Union
An Industrial Union is formed by the virtue of actions of industry but not because of similar crafts or works.
2. Craft Union
Craft Union consists of earning wages from the single occupation, it includes all the work persons working for single craft even of different industries.
3. General Union
The General Union consists of various crafts and industries.
Trade Union Act, 1926:
In the year 1926, The Indian Trade Union Act was passed to provide to the workers for the registration of trade unions with a view to render lawful association of workers. Laws relating to registration in trade unions and providing certain privileges and also protection to the registered trade unions were mentioned in this act.
Trade Dispute
Any dispute between employers and employees or dispute between employee and employee or dispute between employer and employer which is connected with the employment or non-employment, or the terms of employment or the condition of labor is known as Trade Dispute.
